What To Expect | Cold Sore Medications
Know What You’re Taking
Cold Sores affect millions of people across the country, with studies showing 80% of the population will suffer from the incurable infection. In response, there have been dozens of medications created to battle the Herpes virus. However, a number of these oral medications have harmful side effects, ranging from mild to severe to life threatening. Here is an informative list of cold sore medications and the potential side-effects of some of the most popular Cold Sore medications available:
Acyclovir
Acyclovir, otherwise known as Zovirax, are tablets taken orally, often 2-5 times daily during flare-ups. This medication’s purpose is to reduce the severity of infection and length of outbreaks. Prescribing this medication requires a visit to the doctor, often accompanied by a blood test, as Acyclovir can hinder kidney function. Pregnant women also cannot take this medication because of its harmful side-effects (learn more about cold sores and pregnancy). The most common side-effects include:
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Changes in mood
- Shaky movement
- Trouble speaking
The medication rarely causes life-threatening disorders of blood cells & kidneys, and can also cause serious allergic reactions in certain patients.
Famciclovir
Otherwise known as Famvir, this oral medication is sometimes prescribed for shingles and other forms of the Herpes virus. It is taken to help reduce the number of future outbreaks of cold sores, and is taken 2-3 times daily during infections. It requires a regimen of consistent, daily consumption to be effective. Like other prescription medications, it carries its own adverse side-effects, which consist of:
- Headache
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Changes in mood
- Dizziness, Drowsiness
- Easy bruising/ bleeding
A very serious allergic reaction can occur from this medication. These symptoms range from rash, itching, and severe dizziness to trouble breathing.
Valacyclovir
Shortened to Valtrex, which is sometimes prescribed to children for chickenpox, can help reduce future episodes of Cold Sores in adults. But like other oral medications, it requires a visit to your doctor, and requires plenty of fluids be taken with it to lessen the harsh side-effects. Much of these drugs include similar negative health symptoms:
- Nausea
- Stomach ache/ pain
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Changes in mood
- Changes in urine
- Shaky movements
And like many others, can cause life-threatening symptoms such as changes in blood cells, kidney failure, sudden vision changes and seizures, as well as severe allergic reactions.
The one thing common across these medications is their harmful effects of the human body and hindrance on normal functions, with some people experiencing serious or debilitating symptoms. While their effectiveness is certainly present, the price they carry on the body is undeniable.
