Valacyclovir

Valacyclovir Cold Sore Treatment Review
Valacyclovir is the primary ingredient behind the anti-herpes drug Valtrex, marketed by GlaxoSmithKline. The ingredient and effect is that of acyclovir except the body absorption rate of Valaciclovir is 80%, thus rendering it slightly more effective than its counterparts, Famvir and other brands.

Unfortunately, Acyclovir has been studied to be harmful for the liver at repeated doses and should be taken with caution and only before herpes or cold sore breakouts in the genital area. The best time to take Valacyclovir is when the tingling sensation known as prodrome is felt near the genital region, preventing the outbreak from the beginning. Otherwise, if genital herpes is present, our recommendation is to go directly to a topical treatment of your choice, preferably an antidote with anti-bacterial oils and aloe vera, to assassinate the virus.

If an severe outbreak has occurred, use Valacyclovir (valtrex) in conjunction with the strongest, anti-bacterial topical treatment of your choice. To see our recommended treatment for herpes (both HSV-1 and HSV-2), take a look at our cold sores treatment page.

Valaciclovir will unlikely heal cold sores of the HSV-1 variety. It is proven to be more effective for HSV-2 herpes, which is what the drug is derived to do.

Valaciclovir may be effective in reducing the symptoms and signs of recurrent genital herpes. However, studies have shown, they are ineffective for cold sore symptoms.

The appropriate dosage for Valaciclovir is 500mg twice daily for 5 days for oncoming herpes symptoms. For initial outbreaks of herpes (first time breakouts), 1000 MG twice daily is required until the herpes virus is shed. As usually the initial breakouts are the most severe, it is recommended to intake Aloe Vera and other anti-bacterial treatments in conjunction with Valaciclovir.

Unfortunately, as oral intakes are often damaging to the liver that needs to process the drug, our healthy and safe recommendations are to go with your topical treatment of choice. If you need more help choosing the right topical cream for herpes (HSV-1 and HSV-2), please take a look at our
